It started with three carpenters and a yard in the Bregenzerwald. What has changed since is where the work happens — not the trade itself.
Josef Aurenbach opened a carpentry shop in Egg in 1971. Roof structures, balconies, the occasional barn. The work was done outdoors, and in winter there was simply less of it. The first hall in 1979 was not a strategy but an attempt to have something to do in January.
The real break came in 1988. A client wanted to move in by November and nothing was standing in September. We built the walls in the hall and erected them in two days. After that, the question of where a wall gets built never came up again.
Today we are 94 people in Dornbirn. Cornelia Aurenbach-Feurstein runs the company in the second generation; her son Simon is responsible for engineering and production. About half our elements cross a border — into Switzerland, southern Germany, Liechtenstein, and since 2021 France as well.
What separates us from a kit-house manufacturer: we have no catalogue of houses. We build what the architect drew, and we say early which parts of it will be expensive.

What happened over five decades
- 1971
Carpentry shop in Egg
Josef Aurenbach starts a carpentry business with two journeymen in the Bregenzerwald. Roof structures and extensions, all worked in the open yard.

The first hall
800 m² of cutting hall. The reason was winter: under a roof you can work in January too. That it would one day become a manufacturing principle was not the plan.
- 1988
The first prefabricated wall
A deadline that could not be met. The walls are built in the hall and erected in two days. From then on the company never builds a wall on site again.
- 1998
Handover and move to Dornbirn
Cornelia Aurenbach-Feurstein takes over as managing director. Egg has become too small — Wallenmahd offers access to the Rhine valley corridor and room for 16-metre elements.

CNC cutting and the first line
A five-axis machine and the first element line with a turning table. Tolerance drops from millimetres by hand to ±1 mm over sixteen metres.
- 2013
First volumetric modules
A nursery needs four group rooms in eight weeks. Fully fitted modules are the answer — and become the third pillar of the business.
- 2019
Third generation
Simon Aurenbach joins the management team and takes over engineering and production. The second element line goes into service the same year.

Energy from our own offcuts
A wood-chip boiler and 640 kWp of photovoltaics on the hall roofs. 92 % of our process heat comes from material that arises anyway.

One site, two lines
Everything we deliver is made in Dornbirn. We have no second plant and buy nothing in except glulam and ironmongery. That limits how much we can build — and it is why we have to turn projects down every year.

We have trained apprentices since 1974
Of the 94 people here, 31 served their apprenticeship with us. A carpenter who knows how an element is made plans differently later, which is why every apprentice passes through cutting, assembly and erection. Eleven apprenticeships are currently filled; two come free in the autumn.

Three numbers instead of a promise

92 % of process heat from offcuts
The wood-chip boiler runs on what the cutting line and assembly produce anyway. We buy fuel in only during the coldest weeks. On top of that, 640 kWp of photovoltaics on the hall roofs cover 38 % of our electricity.

74 km average haul distance
78 % of our structural timber comes from Vorarlberg and the Allgäu, PEFC certified. The remaining 22 % is silver fir and glulam from Austria and southern Germany.

38 t of CO₂ in one house
A house with 160 m² of floor area in AURA-W locks up around 38 tonnes of CO₂ in its timber — calculated from the mass figures in our component catalogue, not from a brochure. The component finder shows the figure for your own area.
